The Scientific Method

Hi Everyone,

One week of school already passed.  Today on chemistry class I learned how to solve problems using a scientific approach.
One of the most important things we do in everyday life is to solve problems. There are several steps that almost everyone uses to solve problems:

1. Recognize the problem and state it clearly.  In science we call this step making an observation.

2.  Propose possible solution to the problem or possible explanation for the observation. In chemistry it is call formulating a hypothesis.

3.  Decide which of the solution is the best.  To do this we search our memory for new information. In science we call searching for new information performing an experiment.

One we have a set of hypothesis that agrees with our various observations, we assemble them into a theory that is often called a model.
Here is some example of using the scientific method in real life.

Making an observation. Looking for house keys.
Formulating hypothesis 1.: "My keys are in my jacket pocket."
Performing an experiment1.  Look in jacket pocket, keys not there.
Formulating hypothesis 2.: "They are on top of my dresser."
Performing an experiment 2. - Look on dresser, keys not there
Formulating hypothesis 3. - "I left them in my bag last night"
Performing an experiment 3. - Look in the bag; keys are there.
